Kobe Will Have to Carry the Lakers… Again January 15, 2008

Just when the Lakers were playing team basketball and it seemed like they were clicking on all cylinders, the team was dealt a  devastating blow.  Lakers center Andrew Bynum is expected to miss 8 weeks with a knee injury.

Bynum was having a great season.  His 13 points and 10 rebounds per game were making Laker management seem like geniuses.  Bynum’s play was taking the load off of Kobe Bryant who had to carry the Lakers almost every game last season.  Now, there is going to be a big void in the middle, especially on the defensive end.

On Monday, the Lakers pushed their winning streak to seven games, beating the Seattle Supersonics 123-121 in overtime.  Bryant had a season high 48 points, but took 44 shots. Hopefully, someone on the Lakers will step up for the Lakers and fill the void until Bynum gets back, but with those players most likely being Kwame Brown and Ronny Turiaf, it’s going to be a long 8 weeks for Kobe.

Glen Rice Catches Wife Having an Affair, Charged with Battery January 12, 2008

Here’s a crazy story from the Miami Herald.  Former NBA All-Star Glen Rice was arrested and charged with battery after catching his estranged wife, Christina Fernandez Rice having an affair:

Glen Rice, retired Miami Heat player, was arrested early Friday morning following an altercation at his estranged wife’s Coral Gables home.

He was charged with felony battery.

According to the police report, Rice arrived at the house where his wife lives, demanding to know what man she was with and what he was doing at his house.

He found the victim, Alberto Perez, in the master bedroom closet and began beating him, police say, while screaming obscenities at him.

He then physically removed Perez from the bedroom.

Perez then ran out and called the police.

The wound on his forehead required nine stitches.

Rice turned himself in to authorities.

This is a pretty crazy story.  First she gets Rice traded from the Lakers after complaining to the media that Rice was the third option behind Kobe and Shaq, and then she turns around and does this.

You read it right. The Saint Louis Billikens were defeated by the George Washington Colonials 20-49.  The Billikens set a Division I record for fewest points in a game. The team had a terrible first half with just 7 points, but picked it up in the second half, scoring 13 points.  Bryce Husak was the leading scorer for Saint Louis with 5 points. George Washington’s leading scorer Damian Hollis, almost outscored the entire Saint Louis team with 13 points.

Billikens head coach Rick Majerus stated, “I thought GW played tough on defense. We had some issues. You have to credit GW for playing very well. We have some issues in terms of our offensive proficiency. I tried to keep coaching the game. Sometimes you miss. We are a team that has some issues. That is why we are practicing [Friday]. We did miss some good shots, yes. Anyone can look at us and see we don’t have height, we don’t have depth.”

Phoenix Suns Forward Grant Hill is expected to miss 2 weeks, due to an emergency appendectomy:

Suns forward Grant Hill’s best run of good health in years took a surprise interruption today when it was learned he would need to undergo an appendectomy this evening.

Suns General Manager Steve Kerr said Hill likely is expected to miss about two weeks of play.

Hill, mired by acute injuries in the past eight years of his career, had started all of Phoenix’s 34 regular season games, his longest run of consecutive games played since he was in Detroit in the 1999-2000 season. Hill is averaging 15.9 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists and is shooting 50.7 percent from the field.

Hill came to US Airways Center this morning feeling ill and was sent to the hospital by Phoenix head athletic trainer Aaron Nelson because he was not showing any of the usual flulike symptoms. At the hospital, it was determined Hill would undergo an appendectomy.

Not sure what Hinrich could have done to stop this, but Jamal Crawford abused him on this play.  Is it me, or does this type of stuff happen to Kirk Hinrich a lot?

XX3

Pictured above is the Nike Air Jordan XX3. This is the 23rd edition of the Nike Air Jordan shoe, which is set to come out this month.  For years, there have been rumors that the 23rd edition of Air Jordans would be the last shoe to be released and the shoe line would be “retired.”  Jordan and Nike have yet to confirm this, but knowing MJ, even if he does retire the shoe line, there is always a good chance that there will be a comeback.

A Reminder for All You Hecklers Out There January 8, 2008

After Chris Bosh’s girlfriend and cousin caused the Toronto Raptors to lose against the Cleveland Caviliers on Sunday, I urged all the hecklers out there to learn from Spike Lee and stop talking trash to the opposing team’s superstar.  I’m sure many hecklers have failed to learn from Spike, so I decided to post a constant reminder.

Chris Bosh’s Girlfriend and Cousin Cause Raptors to Lose January 7, 2008

The Reason the Raptors Lost

“It’s your fault.”  Those were the words of Lebron James directed towards some female hecklers in the closing minutes of Sunday’s game between the Toronto Raptors and the Cleveland Cavaliers.  The hecklers, who were identified as Chris Bosh’s girlfriend and cousin, were talking trash to James for the majority of the game, which ultimately woke James up. James scored 24 of  his 39 points in the fourth quarter, pushing the Cavs past the Raptors 93-90.

Let this be a reminder to all fans. If you want your home team to win, DO NOT talk trash to the opposing team’s superstar.  They will single handily destroy your team.  Have we learned nothing from Spike Lee?!

North CarolinaClemson

No. 19 Clemson had the best team in the country on their heels the entire night.  Heading into overtime, Clemson had their home crowd behind them, as they look poised to upset No. 1 ranked North Carolina.  Holding Tyler Hansbrough to just 12 points, the Tigers were leading the Tar Heels 88-87 with just 5.4 seconds left in OT.  North Carolina’s Wayne Ellington was the hero of the game however, as he hit a 3-pointer, putting the Tar Heels up for good 90-87.

Clemson  played North Carolina as good as any team could possibly play them.  Not only was their play impressive, but holding Tyler Hansbrough to just 12 points is an amazing feat in itself.  Unfortunately for the Tigers, Wayne Ellington put the Tar Heels on his back.  The game winning 3-pointer gave Ellington a career high 36 points.
